When it comes to cabinets, no matter their location, neutral colors are traditionally the most popular. Grey, cream, white, beige, and natural wood tones are all beautiful, complimentary, and timeless, but is that the only option? Absolutely not! From adding pops color to mixing color to incorporating multiple colors, the possibilities are as endless as your imagination.

Colored Cabinets

Maybe this sounds crazy to you… or like you have just run across the worst idea ever. But with anything, there is a scale. If white cabinets are 0 and hot pink cabinets are a 10, we can always go for a 5, you know? Black, navy blue and olive green are bold but can provide the modern mood you may be going for. The dark, romantic vibes these colors give off allow you to accentuate the hardware of the cabinet as the metal finishes pop against the color. Pastel colors are a unique way to provide some femininity to your space while keeping things classy yet memorable. Imagine the decorating fun you would have with a lavender-themed kitchen!

Mixing Colors

When referencing kitchen cabinets, there are usually upper and lower cabinets. Now the idea is to paint the upper cabinets a different color than the lower cabinets. This can be done as subtly or as boldly as you may like. Whether you opt for the two tones to vary by a few shades or you want the two colors to be complete opposites, the combos are endless. The darker of the two colors is traditionally on the lower cabinets. Typically, this means that the bottom cabinets are more dense and heavy than the uppers, and that is what you usually want. I say “usually” because there are no rules when it comes to color. If you want hot pink on bottom and black on top to live out dreams, then do it! However, the more popular combos include: dark grey and light grey; white and grey; grey and black; and white and black.

Accent Colors

Many homes have the standard shaker cabinet (a cabinet with an outline square on the doors of the cabinet). Choosing to paint the outline or the inside of the door a different color has been growing in popularity. Many of the examples are with white shaker cabinets and a neutral or light pastel accent. This is traditionally only done on the upper cabinets to bring a sense of disruption between the lower cabinets, the backsplash, and upper cabinets. If fully committing to the two-toned cabinets from above is too intimidating, perhaps just adding that second color as an accent to the upper cabinet doors will satisfy your need without being too bold.

In Closing… Trust your Instincts!

Many of the neutral colors come manufactured in that color, so when purchasing new cabinets from suppliers, you may be able to achieve the tone or tones you’re seeking without lifting a brush. However, if the pastel, bright, or accent colors pique your interest it may require you to DIY it yourself! I am sure you could contract out the work if DIY isn’t your jam, but I think you can do it. Are you itching for a colorful change? Try incorporating some color in your cabinets and give your space the pop it needs.
