When walking into a new space, we often first consider the wall color, the table décor, area rugs, the lighting of a space… almost everything but the millwork of the home. But should we reconsider that? Millwork has the ability to set the tone of the area and create an atmosphere without needing décor or furniture to do it. While your eye might wander to other items before the millwork, it is the millwork that got them there in the first place.

Ceilings

You’ve heard of accent walls? How about an accent ceiling? Millworks is being used to create stunning ceiling designs. Grid patterns made out of trim or even the addition of worn weathered wood beams bring a warm vintage vibe to the space. Traditional, more ornamental designs are being featured on the ceiling using millwork as well. These more vintage looks are often being paired with modern furnishings. Also, the coffered ceiling continues to remain a ceiling staple with millwork (typically for acoustic reasons).

Walls

Trimming out the walls of a space to create a rich, romantic look has been growing in popularity. Typically painted the same color as the wall to enhance the softness, the juxtaposition of the vintage-inspired millwork walls with the modern, clean-line designs of the furnishing and décor can often complement each other beautifully.

Paint

Timber and the natural wood color has no doubt made an epic comeback. Society has been reconnecting with nature and with that comes incorporating those feelings of nature into the home. The inclusion of natural wood is a trend that not everyone is ready to embrace, but if it works for you, go for it!

The question you must ask yourself is: do you paint it or not? This goes for new custom millwork as well. White seems to be the ever-growing fan favorite color, especially when painting millwork, but as previously mentioned, some opt for the same as the wall color. Others want it to contrast against the wall color to stand out. Do you think you will paint your millwork or leave it in its natural state?
