When updating your kitchen space, a mixing of the finishes and/or styles of cabinets can make a big statement. Whether you choose a DIY-upgrade with some sanding and a coat of paint or go for completely brand new cabinets, these unique combinations can provide just the change you need to feel refreshed in your space without committing to drastic change.
Mixing Colors
Changing the color of the upper cabinets from the lower cabinets can provide just the unique (but still low key) look you need. Match a white upper with a grey lower or go bold and throw in a pastel blue or sage green to give your space the pop it needs. The mixing of colors can also translate to the island cabinets being different colors from the other cabinets in the space. While it may seem absurd, the result can be quite appealing and quite cost-friendly!
Mixing Finishes
Mixing painted finishes and stained finishes can be a great way to merge both traditional and modern elements. A lighter-colored painted upper cabinet and a darker-stained lower cabinet has been a popular combo. Avoid the darker stain on the uppers due to the heavy look it casts on the kitchen. A light stain on the uppers and a black lower could be astonishing in a neo-classical kitchen. These timeless combinations can provide new life to the space while also keeping it classy.
Mixing Woods
If paint and stain are not the vibe for your kitchen renovation, perhaps consider blending wood types. A light, sanded butcher block countertop contrasted with a darker maple cabinet (where the wood grain shines through) can provide a more natural look to the kitchen space. Pairing a grainy lower cabinet with a sanded upper can also provide this simplistic but elegant approach to the space. Due to this option being the only one where new cabinets need to be purchased, this option is the most costly!
